As someone who has always prided myself on being an eco-conscious consumer, I never imagined that a simple decision to treat my home for fleas would upend my life in such a profound way. But that’s exactly what happened when I made the fateful choice to hire a pest control company to spray our floors with a chemical flea treatment.
The Unintended Consequences
The story began innocently enough. My poor kitty had been licking himself raw for months, and I felt compelled to take action. I trusted that the professionals knew what they were doing and that the system was designed to protect consumers like myself. Little did I know the nightmare that was about to unfold.
Within hours of the technician’s visit, I began experiencing a litany of troubling symptoms – a splitting headache, woozy sensations, electrical buzzing in my arms, and a loss of strength and coordination. My left arm and leg felt icy hot, and my torso reacted to the cold as if it were being stung by yellow jackets. The fatigue was so intense that I could barely muster the energy to get out of bed.
After multiple trips to the emergency room and a battery of tests, the doctors diagnosed me with transverse myelitis – an inflammation of the spinal cord that can disrupt the nervous system’s ability to transmit messages about temperature, pain, strength, and balance. The culprit? Exposure to the pesticide used in my home.
Navigating the Labyrinth of Pesticide Regulations
As I delved deeper into the issue, I was shocked to learn that the pest control company had failed to provide me with critical information about the proper use of the pesticide. The label instructions clearly stated that food-preparation surfaces, utensils, and exposed foods should have been covered prior to application. Additionally, the label directed users to avoid thoroughly wetting the treated surfaces, yet that’s exactly what had happened in my home.
Determined to get to the bottom of this, I contacted the pest control company and the pesticide manufacturer, only to be met with a brick wall. The manufacturer claimed that information about any reported health effects was “proprietary,” effectively shutting me out. Undeterred, I filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the agency responsible for regulating pesticides.
The EPA’s response was both enlightening and disturbing. Over the course of 18 years, the agency had received 156 minor, 24 moderate, and 515 major human incident reports related to the same pesticide used in my home. The list of reported symptoms reads like a medical horror story, including dizziness, difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, tremors, abdominal pain, disorientation, stumbling, coma, seizures, liver failure, and even heart attacks.
The Need for Stronger Protections
As I grappled with my own recovery, which involved physical therapy, occupational therapy, and an arduous process of regaining my strength and balance, I knew that I couldn’t simply let this go. Something had to be done to prevent others from suffering a fate similar to mine.
The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the primary law governing pesticides in the United States, is woefully outdated and in dire need of reform. As it stands, pesticide manufacturers are only required to demonstrate that their products perform their intended function without “unreasonable adverse effects” on human health or the environment. But the law never defines what “unreasonable” means, leaving far too much room for interpretation.
Moreover, the law doesn’t require manufacturers to test the combined effects of multiple pesticides or the interaction of their products with the countless chemicals we encounter in our daily lives, such as plastics and pharmaceuticals. This oversight is particularly concerning, as the synergistic effects of these chemical cocktails can be far more potent and dangerous than any single compound.
I believe it’s time for Congress and policymakers to take a hard look at FIFRA and implement much-needed reforms. Pesticide manufacturers should be required to disclose the full list of ingredients, including so-called “inert” or “other” substances, which can often be more toxic than the active ingredients. The approval process should also include a mandatory assessment of green alternatives that can achieve the same results with less risk.
Empowering Consumers
But the responsibility doesn’t lie solely with the government and industry. As consumers, we too have a role to play in demanding greater transparency and protection. Pest control companies should be legally required to provide homeowners with comprehensive information about the pesticides they use, including label instructions, safety precautions, and guidance on how to minimize exposure.
Moreover, just as landlords and home sellers are required to provide occupants with information about lead-based paint hazards, pest control companies should be required to furnish homeowners with the EPA’s Citizens Guide to Pest Control and Pesticide Safety. This would empower consumers to make more informed decisions, evaluate less-toxic alternatives, and ask the right questions before allowing potentially hazardous chemicals into their homes.
A Renewed Commitment to Wellness
In the aftermath of my ordeal, I made a conscious decision to eliminate all conventional cleaning products from my home and replace them with natural, eco-friendly alternatives. I also canceled our quarterly outdoor pesticide treatment against ants, opting instead for essential-oil-based bug spray to keep mosquitoes at bay.
The path to recovery has not been an easy one, but I’m grateful to have regained my strength and mobility. However, the lingering effects of my exposure to that pesticide have left an indelible mark, both physically and emotionally. I now understand the profound impact that our indoor environments can have on our overall well-being, and I’m committed to sharing my story to raise awareness and drive meaningful change.
